Where to surf in United States Virgin Islands
Like Puerto Rico, a big N swell wrap and offshore NE-E is required and this can be replicated on the northwestern tips of islands like Jost Van Dyke and the far more accessible Saint Thomas in the US Virgin Islands. Hull Bay is the centre of the scene, holding a variety of fun, rolling waves over deeper water reefs, a long way from the beach and the tranquil waters of the yacht moorings, but expect austere wave heights as the 90º NE swell refraction saps plenty of size. There’s fast, hollow, shallow waves at Caret Bay, where the locals are notoriously territorial.
Over on St John, Trunk Bay holds guillotine lips over far out Johnson’s Reef, plus there are a few SE swell options around Reef Bay and a couple of other rare south coast reefs.
Low consistency is the theme on St Croix which is shielded by the outer chains, offshore islets and cays.
