Where to surf in Suriname
Suriname’s 386km coastline is one of the worst for surfing on the continent, with straight gently shelving, sediment loaded beaches bookended by large equatorial rivers. Moderate to strong ENE winds bring choppy seas over short period waves and up to 3m tides keep the waves guessing where to crumble. The capital Paramaribo is too deep inside the mouth of the large chocolate-brown Suriname river. Matapica is probably the best chance of a wave, sandwiched between extensive national parks that protect the many species of turtle nesting along these shores.
