Where to surf in St Vincent & The Grenadines
The Soufriere volcano erupted twice in the 20th Century, bringing widespread destruction to another French/British melange, St Vincent and the Grenadines. The main island of St Vincent poses the best chance of surf and the buffeted black sand beaches of the east coast are usually rideable but messy and uninviting. Possibly the best spot on St Vincent is a consistent left wall out on the shallow, rocky, coral encrusted reef pass entrance to the Blue Lagoon on the south coast. It's a long paddle from the marina and there are currents to deal with, so once again, those with access to a boat are ahead of the game. The Grenadines is all about sailing between protected anchorages and avoiding the windward side surf which undoubtedly exists; it's just hard to get to. Park Point on Bequia has a left and there are plenty more offshore reefs preventing the surf reaching some of the pristine, ivory sand beaches, a theme that continues on Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau, Palm and the larger, but terminally shadowed Union Island. A W or NW swell would have no such barrier and there must be some good set-ups for those rare days.
