Where to surf in Nigeria
Western Nigeria has dead-straight beachbreak, stretching as far as the eye can see from the border with Benin to the Lagos Channel that leads to the enormous Lagos Lagoon. It's inside this polluted, major shipping lane, next to some large jetty constructions that the best and most reliable Nigerian waves break. Tarkwa Beach's quality inside wedge has attracted travelling pros over the years and now forms the hub of the Nigerian surf scene. Out on the open, S-facing beaches, Lighthouse and Shipwreck offer some shape to the straight golden sands.
The east of the country is even less appealing for surfers, thanks to numerous large rivermouths depositing dubious shoals onto a wide continental shelf that drains the long distance S swells of too much power. Poor quality, difficult access and multiple hazards mean this region will remain unsurfed for a long time.
